Halloween Safety: Looking After Yourself and Others This Spooky Season

2 min read

Halloween is a fun and exciting time of year, bringing communities together through costumes, decorations, trick-or-treating, and parties. While everyone enjoys the celebrations, it's important to remember that Halloween can present additional risks, particularly for older adults, vulnerable people, and those receiving care at home.

Whether you're a professional carer, a family member, or simply looking out for a loved one, a few simple precautions can help everyone stay safe and enjoy the festivities.

Keeping Homes Safe

Halloween decorations can create a wonderful atmosphere, but they can also become trip hazards.

Consider:

  • Keeping pathways, hallways, and entrances clear of decorations.

  • Securing electrical cables from lights and displays.

  • Ensuring outdoor areas are well lit.

  • Removing loose rugs or obstacles that could cause falls.

  • Checking that pumpkins with candles are safely placed away from walkways and flammable materials.

For individuals living with mobility difficulties, dementia, or visual impairments, a clutter-free environment is especially important.

Supporting People Living with Dementia

Halloween can sometimes be overwhelming for people living with dementia. Unfamiliar costumes, masks, loud noises, and frequent door knocking may cause confusion or anxiety.

Carers and family members can help by:

  • Explaining celebrations in advance.

  • Limiting exposure to frightening decorations or costumes.

  • Reducing noise where possible.

  • Keeping routines consistent throughout the day.

  • Providing reassurance if someone becomes distressed.

Staying Visible and Safe Outdoors

For those attending events or accompanying children trick-or-treating:

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing where possible.

  • Carry a torch.

  • Choose well-fitting footwear.

  • Take extra care when crossing roads in the dark.

  • Be aware of uneven pavements, leaves, and wet surfaces.

These simple measures can help prevent accidents and falls.

Checking in on Older Relatives and Neighbours

Halloween can be a lonely time for some people, especially if they live alone or are unable to join community activities.

A quick visit, phone call, or video chat can make a significant difference. Checking that they feel safe, have everything they need, and know how to manage visitors at the door can provide reassurance and help reduce isolation.

Managing Trick-or-Treat Visitors

Not everyone enjoys unexpected callers.

If someone you support would prefer not to answer the door:

  • Consider displaying a polite sign.

  • Keep curtains closed if preferred.

  • Have carers or family members manage visitors.

  • Encourage use of a doorbell camera where available.

This can help people feel more comfortable and in control.

Looking After Yourself as a Carer

Carers often spend so much time supporting others that they forget about their own wellbeing.

Remember to:

  • Take regular breaks.

  • Plan journeys carefully if driving in the dark.

  • Stay hydrated and eat well during busy shifts.

  • Ask for support if you're feeling overwhelmed.

  • Take time to enjoy the festivities with family and friends where possible.

When carers are well looked after, they are better able to support others.

A Community Effort

Halloween should be enjoyable for everyone. By taking a few extra precautions and showing kindness to those who may need additional support, we can help create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for all.

From everyone at Unity Care Specialists, we wish you a safe, happy, and spooky Halloween!
