The Unity Care Welfare Kit: Supporting Dignity, Wellbeing and Recovery

At Unity Care Specialists, we are always looking for ways to go beyond delivering excellent care in the home. Sometimes, the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference.
Following a recent Hampshire Care Association Conference, we had the opportunity to connect with a Quality Assurance Nurse and discuss how home care providers can be more proactive when the people we support are admitted to hospital. The conversation highlighted an issue that many healthcare professionals see every day: individuals arriving at hospital without even the most basic personal care items.
This discussion sparked an idea that perfectly aligns with our values of Care, Respect and Excellence.
And so, the Unity Care Welfare Kit was born.
Why Personal Care Matters in Hospital
Maintaining personal hygiene and grooming is about much more than appearance. Having access to toiletries, being able to wash, brush teeth, or freshen up can help people maintain a sense of dignity and normality during what is often a stressful and uncertain time.
Healthcare professionals tell us that individuals who are able to continue their personal care routines are often more likely to:
Get up and about independently where safe to do so
Engage with others and socialise
Feel more confident and positive
Maintain better overall wellbeing during their hospital stay
Be more active participants in their recovery
When someone is unexpectedly admitted to hospital, these simple essentials are often overlooked in the rush of the moment.
Introducing the Unity Care Welfare Kit
To help address this, we have purchased and assembled welfare kits that will be provided to all of our clients.
Each kit includes:
✅ A reusable wash bag
✅ Travel-sized toiletries
✅ Unity Care Specialists contact details
✅ A handy storage solution ready for emergency hospital admissions
The kits have been designed to be practical, easy to store, and ready to grab should they ever be needed.
Members of the Unity Care Specialists team have been busy preparing the first batch of welfare kits, ready to be distributed to clients across our service.
A New Part of Our Review Process
Over the coming weeks, the welfare kits will become a standard part of our client journey.
New clients will receive their kit during their 1 to 2 week review, where a simple checklist will be completed to ensure everything is in place and understood.
As this is a brand-new initiative, we recognise that many existing clients have not yet received theirs. We have already begun creating a large number of kits and will be distributing them during upcoming care reviews until every client has one available.
Planning Ahead for Unexpected Situations
The welfare kits are only one part of a wider approach to hospital preparedness.
We will also continue to encourage clients and families to consider having a hospital bag packed and ready for emergency situations. This can help reduce stress during an unexpected admission and ensure essential items are available immediately.
Where appropriate, our care teams will also be aware of what should be packed and can assist in ensuring key belongings accompany the individual if they are present when a hospital admission becomes necessary.
Items such as comfortable clothing, medication information, glasses, hearing aids, chargers, and personal essentials can all make a significant difference during a hospital stay.
Working Together for Better Outcomes
This initiative is a perfect example of how collaboration across the health and social care sector can lead to meaningful improvements for the people we support.
A conversation at a conference has evolved into a practical solution that helps promote dignity, wellbeing and preparedness. It is another step in our commitment to providing care that goes beyond the scheduled visit and considers the whole person, at every stage of their journey.
At Unity Care Specialists, we believe that great care is often found in the little things. The Unity Care Welfare Kit may be small, but we hope it provides reassurance, comfort and confidence whenever it is needed most.
Because caring isn't just about being there when things are going well. It's about helping people feel supported when they need it most. 💜💙
